FLYING:
Florence Airport (FLR) is served by many airline carriers and connects to other major European airports. When and how you book your flight will be at your discretion.
Do I Need a Visa?
If you’re planning to join us in Italy in 2025, you’ll need a passport with at least six months of validity and an ETIAS travel authorization. Starting in mid-2025, this online application will be required and available for all visa-free travelers. Once your passport and flight are booked, you can apply for your ETIAS at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en or through their mobile app.
Getting Around Town:
You can rent cars, but Florence’s city center has lots of traffic restrictions, so it’s not the best option. Luckily, the city is small enough that you can easily explore on foot.
Taxis and Rideshare:
Taxis are available in Florence, but you can’t hail them from the street. Instead, you’ll need to call one or head to a taxi stand. You can also use the rideshare app Mobike to book and pay for a ride.
What’s the Time Zone?
Florence is in Central European Summer Time (CEST).
What About Voltage and Plug Types?
In Florence, the plugs are type F and L, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz.
What’s the Currency?
You’ll be using the Euro!
Are ATMs Easy to Find?
Yep! ATMs are accessible around town as well as provided at our hotel. Our guests are encouraged to check with the front desk anytime during our stay.
Do They Take Credit Cards?
Yes! Credit cards are widely accepted.
How Much Do I Tip?
Restaurants: Tipping isn’t as common as in the U.S., but some places might add a service charge to your bill. If not, a few extra euros are always appreciated if you had great service.
Bars: Italians often round up their tab to the nearest euro for tips. If you’re sitting at the bar, throw in a couple of extra euros.
Taxis: Tipping isn’t really expected, but if your driver went above and beyond, one to three euros is a nice gesture.
Housekeeping: Leave at least one euro per day for housekeeping.
Any Local Customs I Should Know?
Drinking: The legal drinking age is 18.
Drugs: Cannabis is legal for medical use in Italy.
Greetings: Greet people with a friendly “buongiorno” (good day) or “buona sera” (good evening). A two-cheek kiss is also a common way to say hello.
Walking: Florence’s pace is slower than NYC, so take your time and soak in the sights!
